I promised to share my picks for great movies for moms, available via Netflix through their mailing option or instant streaming. And boy do I have a great one for you! Oh man. Grab the tissues and settle in to watch You’re Not You.
This is one of those movies that you just can’t get out of your mind after you watch it. It is beautifully poignant, moving, and just plain real. The characters are exquisite – each one drawing emotion out of you. Depending on which character we’re discussing I wanted to hug, laugh with, or punch the lights out of them. This film evokes raw emotion.
As with my last pick, the movie description doesn’t exactly grab you…
A life-changing bond develops between a woman (Hilary Swank) with ALS whose marriage is on the rocks and the brash collegian (Emmy Rossum) hired to be her assistant.
However, please give it a chance. It is about so much more than friendship. It covers the complexity of human interaction, yes within friendship, but also within parental relationships, sisterhood, dating, and marriage.
Admittedly, it can be a tough film to watch as Swank’s character is robbed of so many things due to ALS. But there is so much laughter and truth woven into the story that you can’t help but feel – truly feel – the beauty in life, friendship, and death.
Want to own this movie? I do!! You can buy it on Amazon.
